June 2014 – West Slope, Sans Knotweed

photo of west slope
Milkweed and rosa rugosa “Sandy” bloom happily on the west slope, where the knotweed once was. We remain vigilant for resprouts!

June 2014 – Mystery Plant Appears

photo of large plant
This plant is getting way too big for comfort.

What the heck is this stuff?

I think it’s White Sweetclover (Melilotus albus). It’s a nitrogen fixer. Its roots are pretty deep the second year. I decide that if I find any in its first year again, I’ll just till it into the soil (before it flowers!)

Inspiration from Michigan

There seemed to be too many cattails here. There are lots of great native plants, looking beautiful.
photo of fence around tree
Aha! So that’s how they protect their young trees from deer browsing!

May 2014 – Healthier Pond Without Phragmites

It sure is nice to see the pond without any phragmites, dead or alive!

May 2014 – Buckthorn, Revisited

The east side of our property still has buckthorn and bittersweet.

photo of invasives and trillium
Think that 3-leaved plant at the bottom of this photo is poison ivy? Actually it isn’t. It’s a desirable native trillium.
photo of brush
Some pretty huge branches were removed that day.
photo of bench
After I hauled away these invasive things, there was actually a place to sit afterwards, to rest.
